The Three Daughter of Madame Liang
Madame Liang touched her pink silk kerchief to her lips and tried to answer his smile. ´´You will convey the news to her?´´
´´She will be officially invited to return, ´´ he said as he rose. ´´Write to her as mother. Tell her we are beginning our greatest era and needYoung women like her.´´
´´Then she will not live here with me?´´
´´We will see. Crtainly it will be her duty to visit you.´´ Affable and smiling, he bowed his farewell. As she followed him to the door he suddenly turned. ´´ One more suggestion – do not communicate with her through your usual chain! An important link in that chain was found dead in Hong Kong eleven days ago.´´
She returned to herseat, pondering what he had said. What part the dead man played in the ´´chain, ´´ as Chao Chung called it, she did not know. But Chao knew exactly what she had been doing. Her letters to her daughters, written openly, were of course read. But there were others, the few words hidden in a gift –a scarf, a length of silk- sent through her widowed sister in Hong Kong. She must devise a letter warningher sister, and asking her to tell her eldest daughter to go into hiding. She must not come home.
As son as she had this thought she gave it up. Wherever her daugter hid she would be-and punished. And she would´not hide. She had been reared to love her country and to be proud that she was Chinese.
It was several weeks before the summons found its way to Dr. Grace Liang at the botanical stationon the edge of a South American jungle. She had been on a trip in search of cohoba, beyond reach of communication. Returning one night weary and in need of a bath, she saw a bundle of mail upon her table.

She sat down, travel-stained as she was, and loked through the letters. None from her aunt in Hong Kong nor from her mother? She was always anxious about her mother, living her precariouscapitalistic life in the Communist desert. No, wait-here was an envelope- only why from Peking? She tore it open and drew out a sheet of thin rice paper covered with Chinese characters.
´´Comrade Doctor Grace Liang,´´ The letter began. ´´You are invited to return to your native land without delay. Our new China has need of its Young men and women. You will sail on the fifteenth of september on thepresident Cleveland from San Francisco. Your fare is paid. After arrival at Hong Kong you will leave for the mainland. At the border you will be met by a guide who will give you a railroad pass to the capital. This invitation is not to be refused. Your mother has been told that you are coming. You may arrange for a stopover of two days in shanghai to visit her.´´ The letter was signed by unknownname.
