A HAIRCUT
Lenny had noticed that it was time for a haircut. Had not even had to look in the mirror. Even though he was going bald, he had known that the needed to cut his hair every two weeks.
Hehad a "tongue" of hair on the top of his head. His hair was thinning at the crown. He still had plenty of hair on the sides and back. It had been what they call "salt and pepper", a mixture of grayhair and dark brown hair. It had been only a few years, he figured, until the salt and pepper became just salt.
He never had let his hair grow for more than two weeks. The longer it got, the worse ithad looked, he thought.
He had spread a newspaper over the bathroom sink so that no hair had gone down the drain. He had plugged in the clippers and had started cutting his hair. He had started at theback of his head, had gone to the sides, and had finished on the top. Every minute or so, he had to clean the hair out of the blades with an old toothbrush.
Had finished, he had picked up a handmirror to check out the back of his head. Everything had looked okay. He had carried the newspaper back out to the kitchen and had shook the hair clippings into the trash can. Había habido tiempo para un corte de pelo. Lenny ni siquiera había tenido que mirar en el espejo. A pesar de que estaba quedandocalvo, que había sabido que el necesario para cortar el pelo cada dos semanas.

Él tenía una "lengua" de pelo en la parte superior de la cabeza. Su cabello se debilitaba en la corona. Él todavíatenía un montón de pelo en los lados y la espalda. Que había sido lo que ellos llaman "sal y pimienta", una mezcla de cabellos grises y cabello castaño oscuro. Que había sido sólo unos pocos años,pensaba, hasta que la sal y la pimienta se convirtieron en apenas sal.
Nunca se había dejado crecer el pelo durante más de dos semanas. Más tiempo, peor que había visto, pensó.
