FORENSIC CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
AP CHEMISTRY (1)
AUGUST, 22, 2012
Purpose: This lab will help the AP students understand moreabout how chemical reactions are caused and how it is possible to predict an outcome of a reaction by simply knowing the chemical formulas of the substance mixed. It also would demonstrate how forensicchemicals analyze some of the data gathered.
Materials: The materials used for the laboratory investigation- forensic chemical analysis were; an electronic balance, seven plastic boats, three testtubes, a pipet, an 80 milliliter beaker, 17.5 milliliters of white vinegar, 0.4 grams of baking soda, 0.4 grams of baby powder, 0.3 grams of cornstarch, 0.3 grams of Esteban’s powder, 0.3 grams ofpowder found in Esteban’s house, 0.3 grams of Samantha’s baby powder and 0.3 grams of powder found in Samantha’s house.
Procedure:
1. Three plastic boats were weighted.
2. Baking soda, baking powder and cornstarch were added to each of the plastic boats.
3. The three plastic boats containing the substances were weighted. The initial weight of the plastic boats was subtracted fromthe result.
4. Each of the substances in the plastic boats was placed on a different test tube.
5. With a pipet, the same amount of vinegar was transferred from an 80-milliliter beaker toeach of the test tubes.
6. The reaction of each substance to the vinegar was observed and recorded.
7. Each of the following substances was placed on a new different plastic boat, Esteban’sflour, powder collected from Esteban’s house, powder collected from Samantha’s house and Samantha’s baby powder.
8. The plastic boats containing the substances mentioned before were weighted. Theinitial weight of the plastic boats was subtracted from the result.
9. Each of the substances was placed on a different test tube.
10. The same amount of vinegar transferred before to the...
