The Tell-Tale Heart


Edgar Allan Poe “The Tell-Tale Heart” has many symbols. Those symbols are all actions that lead to the murder performed in during the story. Edgar Allan Poe was a writer whose main theme was desolation and sadness as well as tragedy. This is true for The Tell-TaleHeart. It begins in some kind of reformatory. I am inferring this because of the words that are at the very beginning. He is saying and asking to whomever is with him “Why will you say that I am mad?” (Poe 1) at this point he is kind of setting the environment for what the story is going to be about.
The story begins with the tone of nervousness, the need to clarify that he is not mad. He wants togive an explanation of why he murdered the old man. The main character, who does not have a name assigned is trying to prove that what he did can’t be attributed to a mad person. The planning was much too complicated for a mad person because mad people cannot think and plan. “Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded…” the murderer says. He alsowanted to show that being able to calmly tell the “whole story” proved that he was sane (Poe 1)
In addition, it is very clear that the murderer is feeling guilty. When he murdered the old man, whom he loved but could not stand because of the “evil eye” he had, he gave himself away because he could not resist the guilt he had (Poe 1)
The story develops in the house of the old man. As the storygoes, the murderer explains how he accomplished what he had done. “It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night,” the murderer says. He only wanted to get rid of that eye that gave him the chills; he knew the only way was to murder the man. He worked and worked, and for seven days he studied the old man. The murderer went to the roomof the old men and observed. He would stay for hours just paying attention to the old man, but he could not go through with his plan of killing him. The eye was always closed. He did not hate the man; he hated the eye and so it was not possible for him to go through with the plan. Seven days he looked at his prey. He was obsessed with his eye and wanted to murder him.
I think that the murdererkeeps guard on the old man not because he is looking for the right time to kill him, but because he is trying to decide whether to do it or not. He loves the man but the only problem is the eye. The story is around the “pale blue eye, with film over it” (Poe 1). It is interesting how the murderer was so kind with the old man, even more than usual, he says.
On the day of the murder, he was doing theusual rounds that he had been doing through the past seven days. But his time he chuckled and woke the old man up. When the old man first stirred, the murderer knew that he had been heard yet he did not move. The murderer had made his mind up, and tonight was going to be the night when the “evil eye” would bother him no more. He waited and waited. He was very patient. His plan had been so wellformulated that he gave himself the luxury to wait. The murderer heard the old man’s heart beat which grew even louder as time passed, louder and faster (Poe 2-3). He knew the fear that the old man was feeling. He waited. But at the moment when with his lantern he illuminated the eye, he could no longer hold himself.
As the old man was sitting on the bed, full of fear the murderer ran to him. Thisthrew him on the floor and asphyxiated him. Then cut him into pieces and put him under the floor. The plan had worked and the job had been well done. He was so fulfilled (Poe 3). There had been some noise, mourns of the old man as he died. So police were called by a neighbor.
