. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Andrés Avellaneda, my committee chair, for several reasons. His honesty, commitment and knowledge are a model that I hope to follow. His professional and personal engagement in the topic of my thesis encouraged me in every part of the writing process. I greatly appreciate his efforts and support in developing my intellectual career. I am honored tohave written my thesis under his direction and to continue my research with him. I also appreciate Dr. Efraín Barradas’ comments and suggestions. His interest for the topic and his comments, as well as his sense of humor, were very important to me. I also wish to thank two other Argentine friends and classmates, Natalia Jacovkis and Claudia García, for their collaboration. We discussed differentaspects related to the topics I am interested in, and this helped me a lot. Analola Santana and Kathy Navajas are also very special friends I met here, and I am happy to share with them all this process.
