Step 7 - La préparation de mon dossier

Nos oeuvres sont nos compagnons de route.
(Proverbe d'Afghanistan)

Objectives for Step 7

At the end of Step 7 you will have:• completed your dossier on choosing a career.
• written your final report based on the contents of your dossier and the exercises done throughout this module.

What are the absolute essentials for my dossier?

The things one should absolutely have in a portfolio are:

• a title page with - your name.
- the words "French 20, Module 2, Lesson 8, Vers une carrière".
- thedate (in French) you began gathering materials.
- the date (in French) you submitted your portfolio.
- the topic you have chosen (title in French).

• a table of contents (a list, in French, of what is in the portfolio).

• all the materials you have gathered in your research. All entries must be dated; try to find materials in French, but use good English ones when necessary.• an introductory page (in French) where you explain where you looked for information, how you made contacts and why you included the items you put in your portfolio. Remember, each item is there for a particular reason.

How should I assemble my portfolio?

• Use a small three ring binder or an expanding file folder or make your own portfolio out of cardboard, plastic, cloth or some otherdurable material.

• You should have an attached pocket or envelope to keep things like an audio or video tape, computer disk, or anything that can't be put in the binder.

• The physical appearance of your portfolio shows off your skills and abilities in making a presentation so you will get marks for a good presentation.

How should I organize the contents of my portfolio?

• Thearrangement and the sequence of samples you include should complement what you plan to say about each item in your report. You may use:

chronological order: arrangement of your work shows your progressive understanding of your topic.

experiential order: arrangement follows unit Steps and themes as set out in this module.

other: your choice with rationale

• Be sure to identify anddate each entry
i.e. interview avec Jane Doe, le 2 nov., 20__.
Samples should be collected on several occasions over a period of time. Anything can be changed, revised or replaced until the final report is done.

• Use original copies as much as possible, (newspaper or magazine articles for instance). Use quality photocopies when necessary. Your own work should be typed or wordprocessed.

• Insert titled divider pages (in French) to separate each category of samples.

• Position all work in the same direction as much as possible so you are not constantly turning your portfolio around to look at your work.

• You might want to make copies of samples and keep them in a safe place so that if an original gets lost, you can replace it easily.

• Take special care inorganizing your portfolio contents. Your organization scheme creates an impression of your ability as a communicator. You will be given marks for good organization of material.

At this point you should be ready to make your report based on the contents in your portfolio and on the research you have done on jobs and professions as you made an effort to choose a career. Your report shouldreflect what you have learned. If you need to review some grammar points, in particular past and future verb tenses return to Step 1.

Possible introductory sentences for my report:

You need an introductory paragraph where you state your topic and the reason you chose it, for instance:

J'ai choisi de faire ce dossier sur le choix d'une carrière dans les sports (or la médecine, or la...
