As you all know, people have been trying to know what loneliness is and why it happens. Loneliness is not being alone, is feeling alone; feelingthat nobody understands you, or you just don’t understand everyone else. Loneliness, for example, is what Holden, in the Catcher in the Rye, feels. He feels that nobody understands him, but at the sametime, he doesn’t understand the adult behavior. He names all those people who were different from him “phonies”, because he thought that were just faking, they were pretending. I must clear thatfeeling alone and being alone are two completely different things, because Loneliness, is FEELING that you have no one who care of you and who is for you; and “Solitude” is actually being alone, having noone.
“Baumeister and Leary have suggested that all of us have a basic need to belong. This need to belong is as fundamental as the need to eat, sleep, or breathe. The need to belong is theneed to "form and maintain strong, stable, interpersonal relationships.” (The Web of Loneliness). As Baumeister and Leary said in this quote, we all have a need to belong, a need to fit in a society,but sometimes we’re rejected, rejected because we’re different, because we think different, and because we’re rejected, we feel alone. An example could be how Holden feels. In a way, I must say, he isrejected because, for example, the girls he met through out the book rejected him because of his way of thinking, and the way he behaved. That is one reason of how people end up being all bythemselves, because in the attempt of fitting in they failed, not necessarily because of them, but at end they end up alone.
One important word in The Catcher in the Rye is the word “phony”. This...
