The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner: The Truth Behind Failure
As ironic as it sounds The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner is only indirectly about running itself. It focuses on amessage of strength and honesty in which shows the readers how to be honest with themselves. Loneliness is an emotion that happens to everyone once in a while. It lead us to believing the world isn’t aplace in which we don’t belong at times. Loneliness of the Long- Distance Runner takes place in England 1960, told by a juvenile delinquent, Colin, who has lost himself in life. Colin reflects abouthis time in the rehabilitation center for young offenders (Borstal), where he picks up the hobby of long distance running. He is chosen to run for a competing, in which he later decides he is better offlosing. The story shows as an aspect of power, emotions, and individuality in the character. Threw out the story, we see how the Colin, grows up and becomes independent, making the book good forteenagers to read. Yet, what made Colin to turn his back on good, and become a mischievous person? Is the way England turned out after a big emotional shock within war, or society itself pressuringpeople to become something they aren’t?
Colin was known to be trouble maker: a thief, fighter mischievous boy. He was sent to Borstal due to stealing, in which which he was caught by the authorities. Ibelieve this behavior it is caused by Colin's mentality of the WWI in England, in a way he was caught at a time where England was struggling to revenue itself. A profound ripple effect had caused onsociety, men and women had only one mentality, children were expected to grow more quickly than those today, and money has been tough. We can see throughout Colin's life how he constantly describes howEngland has trapped as a society.
