DISASTER OF THE MINERS IN CHILE

The collapse of theSan Jose mine occurred on Thursday August 5, 2010, trapping 33 miners about 720 meters for 70 days.

The field, located 30 km northwest of the Chilean city of Copiapo, was operated by thecompany San Esteban Primera SA

The rescue began the following day by rescuers who worked down a ventilation shaft. A new landslide occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, August 7, necessitatingheavy machinery to continue with the tasks. On Sunday 22 August, 17 days later, the miners were found alive, and after 33 days of drilling interrupted only by machinery problems.

The entireoperation had a cost of 15 millions of dolars, a third of which was funded by private donation and the rest by the State of Chile and Codelco (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile)

Untiltoday is the largest and most successful rescue of the history of mining worldwide, being the event with more media coverage of these features with about 1000 to 1300 million viewers.

In onestudy, the global media impact of the rescue is the largest of Chile's recent history, exceeding that generated the earthquake of February 27, 2010

Chile has a long history in mining, being theGreat Copper Mine the country's main economic sector, a metal which is the largest producer in the world. The site of the San Jose mine has over 100 years old and prior to the collapse of August 2010under the current administration had already recorded accidents, which was closed from March 2007 until its reopening authorized on May 30, 2008.
