CONCEPT OF PUBLIC SPEAKING. PERSONAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS.

What is public speaking and why is it so important ?
Public speaking is not justa speech given in front of an audience. Public speaking retains three important characteristics of conversation:
1. It must preserve the directness and spontaneity of conversation.
Althougha speech is planned, it must not lose the liveliness of a conversation. This is brought about by using fresh remarks and humor. A speech must invite the audience to listen, not to yawn.
2. Yourspeech must be colorful and compelling.
Everyone enjoys listening to good conversationalists because of their colorful speech. People, will not only listen, but will often be influenced by whatsuch speakers have to say.
Compare the following development of the "heat" theme by two speakers:
Speaker 1:
That place was so hot it would make hell seem air-conditioned!
Itwas so hot it would make an armadillo sweat!
It was so hot that rattlesnakes would rattle just to fan themselves!
Speaker 2:
The average summer day in Plainview was often overa hundred degrees.
The literal meaning of both statements is not that different. However, which of these two sounds seem to you more vivid and lively? Which one would you prefer as a listener?3. Your speech is mainly for your listeners.
When you talk in front of an audience, you must be aware of the reactions of listeners, and make both on-the-spot and carefully plannedadjustments to their reactions. You will learn how listeners react. Smiles and frowns, nodding heads, looks of boredom or confusion all are meaningful in conversations. The technical term for thesereactions is feedback.
