The purpose of the study was to explore how Cincinnati football fans used Facebook to manage a social identity threat after Coach Brian Kelly’s the college to become the head coach at the University of Notre Dame. The information provided was inaccurate; the author wascollecting facts instead of explaining a theory.

As this research was studying fans’ social identity, it would be helpful for the reader to understand the meaning of social identity before going further. Also, the author never used certain literature on the research to prove or even to compare results.

Positive Article:
The objectives of this study were to examine the portrayal of minorities insamples of prime time network programming broadcast between the fall of 2000 and the fall of 2008. The author reviews the literature concisely. In several instances author point’s out previous studies from the early 2000 to compare information, including (Glascok,2001; Harwood & Anderson,2002; Mastro & Greenberg, 2000) (Hunt,2002).

Critique hypotheses/research questions. Are they rational,do they fit with the provided research; are the independent and dependent variable clear (and clear defined in the literature review)?

The hypothesis was never established on the research but based on what I read the author’s intention was to study how fans used Facebook to manage a social identity threat and how the students reacted to this situation. The independentvariable is the departure of Brian Kelly to become the head coach at the university of Notre Dame, and the dependent variable is the reaction of fans to this social identity threat in different ways: rallying, stigmatizing, victimization, intimidation and degradation.

As the author focuses his data collection on fans’ Facebook comments, interview questions were not provided. One can assume othermeasures must have been in place to obtain institutional review from other colleges but these were not listed in the article.

Positive Article:
The results are feasible and understandable; as soon as you read the hypothesis, you can connect with the topic and are able to understand the results. Also, the research questions were clear and adequate. In this article the authorwas having the control of the study by formulating the correct hypotheses and addressing the right research questions

H1 a: The percentage of the population of African American’s on television had begun to reflect their proportion in the U.S population.
H1 b: The proportion of other racial and ethnic minorities (Hispanics, Latinos, Asians, and other people ofcolor) is less than the proportion in the U.S population

H2 a: In prime time, the proportion of black women is less than their proportion in the U.S population. The proportion of black men is greater than their proportion in the U.S

RQ1: Did the representation of minority groups change between 2000 and 2008
RQ2: Did the genre and racial makeup of program’s change between 2000 and 2008

Did they used the proper methodology in examining their RQs/hypotheses? If not, how would you have improved it?

The author would have reliable results by increasing the data, formulating research questions and focusing on another methodology.
