SPECIFICATION SECTION 16000 for
MEDIUM VOLTAGE ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES

1. GENERAL

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 THIS SPECIFICATION DEFINES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDIUM VOLTAGE ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE SYSTEMS (AFD’S) FOR THE OPERATION OF XXX HP MOTORS.

1.2 The Bidder shall prepare the bid to be in complete compliance with this specification. Any exception shall beincluded in the bid with an explanation, clearly indicating the paragraph of this specification to which the exception applies, and concisely stating the reasons.

1.3 Unless clearly identified as an exception, this specification shall have precedence where there is conflict between bidder’s descriptive information and this specification.

1.4 The contractor shall furnish all tools,equipment, material, supplies and perform all labor required to install the medium voltage adjustable frequency drive system[s] as indicated on the drawings and specified herein in order install, test and place the AFDs into satisfactory operation.

3.0 System Description

3.1 THE SYSTEM SHALL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING MAIN COMPONENTS: ONE MEDIUM VOLTAGE ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE (AFD), FUSED ISOLATION SWITCH, ISOLATION CONTACTOR, DRIVE ISOLATION/PHASE SHIFTING TRANSFORMERS COPPER WINDING WITH MINIMUM 24 PULSE RECTIFICATION, DCBUS PRE-CHARGE CIRCUIT, OUTPUT HARMONIC FILTER AS NECESSARY. ALL ABOVE ITEMS ARE TO BE INTEGRATED IN ONE AFD ENCLOSURE NOT TO EXCEED ” W X ” D X ” H.

3.2 The integrated dedicated fused contactor with isolation switch will be rated to protect the AFD from specified short-circuit levels. The minimum interrupting rating of the input contactor shall be 8500A @ 400A and 12,500A @ 800A. TheAFD enclosure doors shall be interlocked to prevent opening when main power is available.

3.3 DC bus capacitor charging is accomplished by use of a DC bus pre charge circuit. The DC bus capacitors are charged before application of main power, which eliminates the very high damaging inrush currents to the main rectifier/converter bridge devices. When the proper DC bus voltage is attained,the pre-charge circuit is turned off.

3.4 The AFD shall meet the requirements of IEEE 519. The point of common coupling shall be located at the utility. The harmonic current distortion shall not exceed the limits listed in table 10.3 of IEEE 519. The harmonic voltage distortion shall not exceed the limits listed in table 11.1 of IEEE 519.

5. The AFD shall be supplied with2400/3300/4160V, 3-phase, 50/60 Hz power and shall be capable of operation with a +/-10 % voltage variation.

6. The AFD shall be rated for 60kV BIL and 50ka short circuit.

3.7 Auxiliary power 480V, 3-phase, 50/60 Hz shall be provided internal to the integrated Drive. External auxiliary supply voltage sources will not be acceptable.

3.8 The drive will be suitable for themotor(s) rated 2400/3300/4160V, 3-phase, 50/60 Hz, XXX hp.

3.9 For variable torque applications the overload capacity shall be 110% of rated current for 1 minute repeated every 10 minutes. For constant torque applications the overload capacity shall be 150% of rated current for 1 minute repeated every 10 minutes.
