LEADING A GLOBAL COMPANY


LEADING UP

First rule – Figure out what your boss REALLY needs… What makes sense, what should we really be doing? People are doing things that someone asked them toperform but they have no idea why they are doing it.

• Master dealing with various personalities – this lays the foundation:
o Scenario 1 - I can actually influence up – whatever youneed you’ll have, you can count on me but I’m doing it in my terms.
o Scenario 2 – If I cannot convince him do I go one level up? If I’m a leader I have a responsibility to go up. But I willnot go one level up without telling him/her that I’m doing it.

When you talk about leadership – how do you lead up? -- Respectfully, in a way that gets others to think about the total…

I can’tbe a leader if I’m not at least challenging the things that I believe ought to be challenged. The HOW you do it is very important as will dictate the outcome – respectful, with simplification, etc.EXAMPLE
Assume you have taken over a division (Highway of what to do):

1. VALUE – Set clarity / expectations, what is acceptable, how we will operate. Setting the example should start early.2. PEOPLE – Attracting, hiring, developing, providing feedback, and retaining – getting people “on the bus”. Not only know what you want and make sure you discuss with your boss, also know whatmembers of your team what and provide solid / constructive feedback to elicit action. Try to let people know where they stand – delivery is key.

HOW WE GIVE / GET FEEDBACK
SettingExpectations and managing to those. Set up clear ground rules. This has to work both ways. Learn from the process and recalibrate. Build up trust and be genuine. Provide examples – the more the better. Whengathering feedback, the more perspective you get the better.

3. SETTING DIRECTION – Set a clear direction and make sure everyone in the organization knows what direction that is. As the boss make...
