MIX IT UP
Last week, there was a science fair. Katie made a presentation. She showed what happens when you mix different things. Katie won first prize. She got a special certificate. NowKatie is at home with her brother Zach. They are in the kitchen.
“Let’s see what happens when we mix salt and sand,” says Katie. Zach and Katie put salt and sand in a bowl. They mix them up.“Does the salt change?” asks Katie. “Does the sand change?” Zach looks in the bowl. “No,” he says. “They look the same as before.” “You right!” says Katie.
“Let´s see what happens whenwe mix salt and water,” says Katie. They put salt and water in a bowl. Zach stirs. Soon the salt disappeared. “All I see now is clear water,” says Zach. “This mixture is called a solution,”says Katie. “The salt dissolved in the water. The salt is still there. We just can’t see it.” “How do you know?” asks Zach. “I can taste it,” says Katie. “It tastes salty.” Zach tastes thewater, too. He makes a funny face. “I don’t like salty water.” Zach and Katie laugh.
“Now let’s mix sugar and water,” says Katie. They clean the bowl. Zach puts in the sugar. Katieadds the water. “What will happen?” asks Katie. She wants to see if Zach is learning. I think the sugar will dissolve,” says Zach. “Right!” You got it! says Katie. “Your work is very impressive!How do you think this solution will taste?” Zach takes a taste. “I am happy to report that it tastes sweet!” he says. “I know something else that will dissolve in water,” says Zach. He takesout a box of lemonade mix. “Right again!” says Katie. She gets a pitcher of water and two glasses. Zach adds the lemonade mix to the water. Katie stirs. “This solution will taste the best.”I Answer the questions.
