The gateway Arch
The gateway Arch or gateway to the west is the most important part of the Jefferson memorial. It was built as a monument to westward expansion of the EE.UU. This arch has 192meters of weight and with 192 meters high is the tallest man-made monument in the United States.
To decide who was going to be the architect, it was made a national competition of design (1947-1948).Finally the gateway arch was designed by Finnish American architect: Eero Sarinem. The construction of the arch began on February 12, 1963 and was finished on October 28, 1967.
Nowadays, to go to theobservation area and enjoy the views, visitors can travel in 40-passenger tram that runs inside the arch. Each ticket costs $10.00 for adults and for kids $5.00.
WASHINGTON MONUMENT
TheWashington monument is a White-colored obelisk built as a tribute to George Washington for his military leadership during the American Revolution. It is located at the west end of the National Mall, inWashington D.C. It measures 169.294m and weights 81.120 tons.
Plans for a national monument began as early as 1783 when Congress proposed than an equestrian statue of George Washington should be erected.Lots of architects presented their designs and the winner was Robert Mill’s one. The construction began in 1848. However it wasn’t completed until 1884, due to lack of funds during the Civil War.From 1998 to 2000, the Washington Monument was restored and in 2005 a new wall was constructed around the monument to improve security.
Nowadays there’s an elevator that takes visitors to the top to seea spectacular view of Washington D.C. It is said that the view includes unique perspectives of the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the Jefferson Memorial and the Capitol Building.
