Páginas: 9 (2181 palabras) Publicado: 9 de octubre de 2012
Introduction
Australia is one of the world’s oldest landmasses and has been populated by humans for approximately 60, 000 years. Before the arrival of European inhabitants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders occupied most areas of this continent. Australia’s modern history is relatively new, with the first European settlement established by Great Britain on 26 January 1788 (Departmentof Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2011). Australia is considered a multicultural country; (Graham, 2009) stated that Australia is a country formed by many countries, cultures and backgrounds. Thus, she defined multiculturalism as accepting, respecting, appreciating and understanding different cultures. In general, multiculturalism celebrates cultural diversity (Graham, 2009). This case study willdefine Culture, and analyse the background and description of two different interviewees, showing their perspective on culture, a description of how culture impacts on their life, beliefs and interaction with other cultures, and consequently, provide their suggestions for lessening the impact of cultural divides that may occur during the process of socialization in a multicultural country. The firstinterviewee is Dariusz a 52 years-old man originally from Poland, and the second interviewee is Rosa, a 29 years-old woman originally from Peru. This case study will examine the similarities and difference in how culture has an impact on their personal experience. Application of relevant literature is going to support this study.
Ferraro (1998) Define Culture as “something we learn fromparents, teachers and those who share a similar worldwide. We do not inherit culture; we learn it. Culture is not a person, yet it is expressed in the persons behaviours.....Culture is shared by a social group or a society (as cited in Moir-Bussy & Sullivan 2007).
Polish Cultural Case
Background.

Dariusz was born in Poland, during the communist government, and had alwaysdreamed of travel and experiencing different cultures. However, during the eighties in his country travel was difficult for the citizens because of the cold war, (Kemp-Welch, 2008). Dariusz speaks fluent Polish, English, and Russian. His cultural background is that of a traditional Polish catholic family and his education from a Polish college with a degree in engineering and machine mechanic, althoughhis work here is in the fencing industry. Dariusz explains that, after college, he spent 2 years in the army. However, after he completed his compulsory military service he tried to return to his normal life, but found it extremely hard, as he came from two different environments, the civil and the military, and he could not find himself a place in any of these. Then, he left Poland escapingfrom the communist regime looking for a better life (Grassby & Hill 2000), fleeing to Austria for his safety, and waiting there for six months to be accepted in Australia as a refugee (Grassby & Hill 2000). During the process of his approval, he had been sent to different places, until his Australian visa was granted in 1985. Porwal (2009) suggests it is necessary understand the cultural statusbecause the attributes that conform the environment plays a key role in the transformation of the individual.
Perspective on Culture
Dariusz grew up in a traditional Catholic family where he has been taught that family, and honest work are the most valuable things in life.
His interpretation of culture implies respect, family values, and honesty, nonetheless, he believes that, asan immigrant, he must respect and embrace the Australian way. Although of Polish background, he considers himself more Australian than Polish, and consequently, every time he travels to visit his friends and family, he feels like he does not belong to that environment any more (Cheetham 1972). Dariusz said “strangely, I feel like a tourist who just shares with them the language. However, I am...
