The Age of Absolute Rule Divine Right: what did people believe about their kings? Where was this? People in France did not choose their king. They believed that god chose theking, and the king was God’s representative. The king’s right to rule was divine= it was thought to come directly from God. This was called the divine right of kings, and many Europeans believed init 400 yrs ago.

What was the symbolism of “The Sun King”? Louis was so powerful that he became known as the ‘’Sun King’’ just as the sun was the center of the solar system, Louis was de center ofthe French nation.

What is an absolute monarchy? Absolute monarchs had absolute, or complete power over every part of life in his kingdom. Absolute monarchs did not share power with nobles,parliaments or the people.

How did monarchs become so powerful in France? It took long time for French kings to gain absolute power. King Louis was as powerful as he was because other kings had graduallytaken power away from nobles.

Absolute Rule in France Give three ways Cardinal Richelieu increased the power of the King. Cardinal Richelieu had served as chief minister to Louis’ father, LouisXIII-> for 18 yrs, he worked to increase the power of France, and the French king. To do this, he had to destroy power of the nobles. He allowed the wealthy merchants to buy titles of nobility, then hestripped the old nobles of some of their rights. Also started business for the French government. Businesses= earned a great deal of money for the crown. Altogether these changes made the nobles weakerand the king wealthier and more powerful.

How did Versailles represent the power of the King? Louis lived in incredible luxury at Versailles, his huge palace outside Paris. Many nobles lived at thepalace with Louis, to have them satisfied, they made huge parties with lots of entertainment. He treated them well, and most part, left them from paying taxes.
