They believed that god chose theking, and the king was God’s representative. The king’s right to rule was divine= it was thought to come directly from God. This was called the divine right of kings, and many Europeans believed init 400 yrs ago.

How did monarchs become so powerful in France? It took long time for French kings to gain absolute power. King Louis was as powerful as he was because other kings had graduallytaken power away from nobles.

Cardinal Richelieu had served as chief minister to Louis’ father, LouisXIII-> for 18 yrs, he worked to increase the power of France, and the French king. To do this, he had to destroy power of the nobles. He allowed the wealthy merchants to buy titles of nobility, then hestripped the old nobles of some of their rights. Also started business for the French government. Businesses= earned a great deal of money for the crown. Altogether these changes made the nobles weakerand the king wealthier and more powerful.

Many nobles lived at thepalace with Louis, to have them satisfied, they made huge parties with lots of entertainment. He treated them well, and most part, left them from paying taxes.
