NAFTA
The North American Free Trade Agreementor NAFTA is an agreement signed by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. The agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. Itsuperseded the Canada – United States Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and Canada. In terms of combined GDP of its members, as of 2010 the trade bloc is the largest in the world.
What Are theAdvantages of NAFTA?:
NAFTA created the world’s largest free trade area, linking 444 million people and producing $17 trillion in goods and services annually. Estimates are that NAFTA increases U.S. GDP byas much as .5% a year.
That's because it eliminates tariffs and creates agreements on international rights for business investors. This reduces the cost of trade, which spurs investment and growthespecially for small businesses. Eliminating tariffs also reduces inflation by decreasing the costs of imports.
An important benefit of the NAFTA for Canada has been the much improved access to theMexican market. Canadian firms have been able to expand sales in sectors that were previously highly restricted, such as automotive products, financial services, trucking, energy and fisheries. Also,Canadian exports have become steadily more diversified, with value–added manufactured products accounting for the largest share of total exports to Mexico in 1998. Mexico is now Canada’s 13th largestexport market and fourth largest import source.
Canada’s NAFTA exports have grown substantially, and have been particularly successful in high value–added sectors such as automotive equipment(trucks,cars and parts), machinery and parts and industrial goods.
