This book talks about the historical analysis of modern literature of Trinidad and Tobago and its diaspora incorporating and challengingpost-colonial theory's construction of the nation through close readings of Caribbean writers such as C.L.R. James, Sam Selvon, Earl Lovelace, VS Naipaul and others. The setting of this book andevents are based on books and novels written by Trinidadian writers during the 1900’s about the island of Trinidad.
This Trinidadian writer, Stephano Harney, son of Professor Robert F.Harney put inwriting a compilation of readings from different sources and texts in order to bring forth and understanding of the Nationalism and daily cultural practices in the Caribbean, and the invention of the islandof Trinidad and Tobago. The writer goes on to bring out societal and historical texts which aim is to uncover the way of living and being in the world of Trinidad and its diaspora and how Trinidadhas emerged and grew from a nation once described as “a west Indian society which inherited a tradition of immorality from the slave system” into “a land imagined by a fecundity of combinations.[1] Ithink the writer did a great job by researching and grouping together the different texts and source material to write this book. In his effort of doing so, the reader, while reading this book gets toimagine postcolonial Trinidad and get the general idea and a better understanding of the identities and culture of the Trinidadian nation as it related to the rest of the Caribbean.
