Las tortugas se clasifican dentro del grupo de los reptiles y se caracterizan por su tronco corto y ancho. Las tortugas no tienen dientes, pero su fuerte mandíbula afilada, conforma de pico les permiten devorar su alimento.
Una de las características de las tortugas, que varía según a la especie que pertenezcan, es su longevidad, pudiendo alcanzarhasta los 150 años de vida.
Existen tortugas de hábitat terrestre, acuático, marino y de agua dulce.
Los pulmones de las tortugas son muy similares a los del humano, puedencontener la respiración durante diez minutos.
No tienen oídos externos, si no que disponen de uno interno muy eficiente
El sentido del olor es débil, el de la vista es mejoren las tortugas marinas, pero tienen un sentido de orientación muy desarrollado.
La madurez sexual se da entre los 6 y 8 años de edad, generalmente, los machos esperan a lahembra fuera de la playa para reproducirse.
