0n April 20, 2010 the worst disaster happened in the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon spill was the largest offshore oil spill in the U.S history. This causedserious damages to marine and wildlife habitats all over the coast, also to fishing and tourism industries. But not only that also 11 workers were killed on the explosion. Apart from this the U.Sgovernment imposed a six month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the area, in order to involve an environmental investigation of the impact and to be able to prevent the oil from spreading throughout thecoast.

Furthermore it seems that this Obama’s decision was under criticism, attorney Carl Rosenblum said “this is an unprecedented industry wide shutdown. Never before has the government done this’’.This suspension of the drilling may have a further impact in the economy and the loss of jobs. Rosenblum state that “Thousands of businesses will be affected”, “These dominoes are falling as wespeak.” Moreover a lawyer for the state told Judge Martin Feldman that the federal government did not consult Louisiana officials this moratorium decision, as that it was a violation of the federal law.Also lawsuit filed by Hornbeck Offshore Services of Covington LA, claimed that government imposed the moratorium without any proof of the operations danger.

But is it needed more proofs of therisks this drilling can caused? Six months are necessary to be able to think about the consequences this has caused and try to find a way to fix this huge problem that seems to affect everyone. CatherineWannamaker a lawyer of several environmental groups said that six months is a reasonable time for drilling to be suspended while the government studies the risks and regulations governing theindustry.” The risks here are new” she said.
