Alcohol is a depressive substance, which means that it reduces the brain’s activity. Alcohol can be found in different concentrations in beer, wine and drinks often called “strong drinks” likewhiskey, rum, ginebra and vodka. Beer has an amount of 5% of alcohol.Wine has a 6% of alcohol and “strong drinks” have a 40% of alcohol. If we drink a can of beer, a glass of wine or a “shot” of rum (of ½an ounce), we are drinking the same amount of alcohol. What is important to know is not the class of drink, but the quantity of alcohol behind each and every one of them Alcohol has various effectsover diverse organs and functions of the human body. Due to its chemical characteristics, it is absorbed rapidly in the stomach and thin intestine, from which a while later it reaches a high level ofalcohol in the blood, as well as other effects in the body. Although the alcohol has effects on practically all organs, apparatus and systems, the most importan tones are the changes it produces on thebrain and the conduct in the cardiovascular system and liver.
Alcohol has important effects on the esophagus and the stomach since it damages the mucus cover that protects them and also harms andexternal cells of the mucus, which favors the aparition of ulcers and gastritis.

In the brain, the changes provoked by alcohol are directly proportionate to the dose inquired and could be completelyopposite: small doses can cause a state of happiness, closet o euphoria while high doses could provoke sleepyness, a state of coma or even death. The quantity of alcohol that provoques symptoms variessince every person processes alcohol in a different way: there are people that with small doses of alcohol could be feeling or experimenting intoxication while there are other that can consume highamounts of alcohol and continue without showing any symptoms or grave alterations
