Earthquake: February 27, 2010
An 8.8 Richter scale earthquake devastated Chile this morning, radiating from an epicenter 317kilometers south of Santiago, the nation's capital. Everything happened when the crust a thin layer of solid, relatively cold rocks covering the Earth’s surface which lie on the warmer and very viscous rocksof the mantle got this movement is causing the formation of very slow moving convection cells in this underlying mantle. The currents of the cells are driven by the heat from the core of the Earth,allowing the warmed mantle to rise to under the crust where it cools over time.
Days after the earthquake there weren’t any foreshock that wouldn’t prevent us from something. Everything was prettycalm, not even microshock occurred that day evening. It was about 3:34 AM the morning of the 27 of February that earth started to move making a lot of disaster in our country and leaving lots of familywithout a place to live. The magnitude of the earthquake was 8.8. An aftershock of 6.2 was recorded 20 minutes after the initial quake. Two more aftershocks of magnitudes 5.4 and 5.6 followed withinan hour of the initial quake.
The Mercalli intensity scale is a scale used for measuring the intensity of an earthquake. The scale quantifies the effects of an earthquake on the Earth's surface,humans, objects of nature, and man-made structures.
