RESUMEN:
 
Si anacrónico resultahablar de Orden de San Agustín en el siglo iv según la actual
estructura jurídica, también lo es el llamar a San Agustín «fundador» de la Orden Agustiniana tal y como surgió en el siglo xiii. Tanto la «Unión Fundacional» de 1244 como
la «Gran Unión» de 1256, urdidas por la Sede Apostólica, indican el nacimiento y consolidación de una nueva Orden religiosa formada por la unión de varios movimientosde
ermitaños de Toscana, Juambonitas, Bréttinos, Guillermitas y de Monte Favale, adoptando
la forma de vida según la Regla de San Agustín y la organización propia del modelo de
las órdenes mendicantes. Una gran parte de la historiografía agustiniana, desde el siglo
xiv y en menor medida a partir del siglo xx, aborda esta cuestión histórica en una forma
no-histórica, dando pie a falsificaciones ytradiciones míticas que falsean la realidad al
proponer a San Agustín como el fundador histórico de la Orden de Ermitaños de San
Agustín. Esta «leyenda agustiniana», formada a contra pie de la historia, ha sido desenmascarada por la investigación histórica seria, rigurosa y crítica. El Hiponense no puede
ser considerado el «fundador» en sentido propio del término —el que funda, instituye o
erige—,puesto que la Orden de Ermitaños de San Agustín surgió en el contexto histórico,
social y religioso del siglo xiii por voluntad explícita de la Iglesia.

ABSTRACT:
 
If it is anachronistic to speak of Order of St. Augustine in the fourth century under
current legal structure, so is call Saint Augustine «founder» of the Augustinian Order
as emerged in the thirteenth century. Both the «FoundingUnion» in 1244 as the «Great
Union» in 1256, concocted by the Apostolic See, indicate the birth and consolidation of
a new religious order formed by the union of several movements hermits of Tuscany, of
Brettino, John of Good (Bonites), of the Williamites and Monte Favale, in the form of
life under the Rule of St. Augustine and the organization of the model of the mendicant
orders. Much of theAugustinian historiography, from the fourteenth century and to a
lesser extent from the twentieth century, this historic issue addressed in a non-historical
form, giving rise to falsifications and mythical traditions that distort reality to propose
to San Augustine as the historical founder of the Order of Hermits of St. Augustine. This
«Augustinian legend», formed on the wrong foot in history, has beenunmasked by the
serious, rigorous and critical historical research. The Hiponense can not be considered the
«founder» in the proper sense of the term —which found, institutes or set up— since the
Order of Hermits of St. Augustine emerged in the historical, social and religious context
of the thirteenth century by the express wish to the Church.

Contar la historia no es tarea sencilla. Elconocimiento del pasado
se enfrenta de continuo con el problema de la verdad del hombre mismo
y de su quehacer en este mundo. Así, una cosa es la verdad vivida,
otra la verdad percibida, y otra muy diferente la verdad escrita, bien a
modo de registro o crónica, o bien interpretada acorde a intereses tanto
personales como institucionales. Desde este punto de vista no resulta
llamativo que a lo largo delos siglos la historia se haya prestado a
sutiles manipulaciones y a la proyección de imágenes extravagantes
por parte de historiadores. Por desgracia el conocimiento de la realidad
importaba menos que la representación atractiva e interesada de una
imagen de la realidad, que sólo pudo fabricarse omitiendo y/o tergiversando hechos significativos. Esta distorsión de la verdad no puede
ser aceptada...
