Paraguay (Guarani: Paraguái), officially called the Republic of Paraguay (Guarani:Teta Paraguái), is a country located in south central and eastern South America and in the north and northeast of the Southern Cone. To the south, southeast andsouthwest by Argentina, the east by Brazil and Bolivia to the northwest. TheParaguayan territory is the seventh largest country in South America and occupiestwo distinct regions separated by the Paraguay River, the Oriental, which is themost populous, and the West, part of the Chaco Boreal. While it is a country that has no sea coast, 6 has ports on the Paraguay and Parana rivers that give an outlet to the Atlantic Ocean through the Paraguay-Parana.
Paraguay is a secular, democratic, unified, organized in seventeen governoratesor departments andcapital. Is a founding member of Mercosur with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay is a member of UNASUR. Among his greatest highlights exportpotential power, the second largest exporter of energy and with Brazil owner of one of the largest operational hydroelectric world.8 is the fourth largest soybean producer and ninth largest exporter of beef.


Paraguay was discovered by Alejo Garcia and SebastianCabot, under the command of Spain in 1524. The city of Asunción was founded in 1537 by Juan deSalazar y Espinoza natural Espinosa de los Monteros (Spain) being consolidated by Juan de Ayolas. Realising thus beginning a long history of colonialism, up to 1811, when it gained independence from Spain.
Upon the arrival of European conquerors Spanish territory in eastern Paraguay, iethe area betweenthe Paraná River to the east and west the Paraguay River, wasinhabited by Native American ethnic groups who were at war among them, theseethnic groups belonging to three different sets: the pámpidos, the lágidos andamazónidos. It is unclear whether lágidos were the first to occupy the territory, or were preceded by pámpidos. It is documented that by the fifteenth centuryamazónios commonly known asAva Guaraní managed to advance from the northand east through their numerical superiority and the possession of material culture developed and practiced horticulture cassava, maize and peanuts. The practice of slash surplus allowed them to sustain a growing population demographic thatrequired new territories.
Independence

In 1806 and 1807 the British invasions occur, occupying the city ofBuenos Aires and much of the Banda Oriental. From Assumption and from Cordoba sent troops to support in the victory against the attackers. The British Invasions showed the inhabitants of the viceroyalty that the Spanish power was incompetent and that the native populations could define their own destiny.
In 1810 he arrived in Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata, the newsthat Spain had been fully occupied by French troops of Napoleon Bonaparte. In response, in Buenos Aires met an open meeting, the May 25, 1810 established the First Government, that was the so-called Revolution of May.Among its objectives was to form a congress of representatives from all provinces of the Viceroyalty of River Plate, so that communicated the news to all cities in its jurisdiction.In response, the royal governor of Paraguay Bernardo de Velasco sent to Buenos Aires a note announcing the separation of the Province of Paraguay the Viceroyalty of the Rio de La Plata. Velasco and his followers met a General Meeting on June 24, 1810, which reiterated its loyalty to the Council of Regency, who had taken refuge in Cadiz and ruled the Spanish monarchy of Ferdinand VII, Napoleon'sprisoner.
At the end of 1810 troops led by General Manuel Belgrano marched on an expedition to try to add Paraguay to the newly formed United Provinces of Río de la Plata.
