Power Supply
The power supply provides the power for the computer to run. Newegg.com calls the power supply the "heart of the computer" because how well it runs affects the performance of the entirecomputer. The small box, housed on the inside of the chassis, features ports for power cables and fans to keep the unit cool while running.
Motherboard
An internal computer part, the motherboardprovides the connections that allow the computer's components to work together. All other computer components, except the chassis, work from information carried through the motherboard.

Processor/CPU
The central processing unit (CPU), also called theprocessor, allows the computer to interpret and perform functions and process software and instructions. A computer's performance relates directly to the quality of the CPU.
Memory (RAM)
Computermemory allows the user to access information quickly while working on a document or program. Instead of having to retrieve the information from storage each time, a computer's memory allows easier accesswhile the computer remains on. Information must be saved to a hard drive to store while the computer is off.
Hard Drive
The hard drive serves as a computer's storage device. Hard drives can beexternal or internal and offer varying amounts of storage space depending on the model. The units store the information even when the power supply is off, allowing the computer to be shut down withoutlosing all the information.
Floppy, CD-ROM and DVD Drives
Floppy drives can still be installed in computers for use with older operating systems but are generally considered obsolete. CD-ROMs allowsignificantly more storage per disk than floppy disks, so CD-ROM and DVD drives have become much more common and useful to the general computer user.
