Introduction

The principal topic of this investigation is learning about the norms, devices, instructions that we haveto take at work in the engine room.

The engine room is a place where personal safety is paramount, because there is the ship's main engine, the majority of power generation equipment, boilers, high pressure compressors; water pumps ballast water, oil pumps for the main engine.

The interaction with these devices by the crew can cause accidents, personal injury mild to severe. For thisreason the security requirements aboard vessels is essential and strict.

In this investigation, we can found the personal implements of security used in the engine room, like protective clothes, hard hat, security gloves, ear protection, security footwear, security glasses or goggles.

We research about housekeeping in the engine room and what is the important to safety of the crew ofkeeping the cleaning of the floor free of oil.
We also investigate the causes of fires in the engine room and the procedure to prevent and extinguish fires. Alarms, fire prevention systems in the engine room, such as CO2 sprinklers, fire extinguishers.








Personal Safety in the Engine Room

Safety equipment used in the engine room ranging from security clothes, safetyglasses, hard hat or helmet, gloves, hearing protection, dust masks, respirators or breathing apparatus when working in dusty or toxic atmospheres, safety footwear.

Protective clothing: this is the first barrier against hazards in the engine room.   Overalls with long sleeves will protect the skin against dirt and abrasion.   A good fit prevents clothing getting caught in moving machinery.   Rings andjewelry can also be caught in moving machines, so remove them before duty.  

Safety footwear is designed to be slip resistant and to protect your feet from heat, knocks and cuts.  

Hardhats protect the head from injury caused by knocks against overhead structures or from impact caused by falling objects.   Tools and equipment falling from a height are a danger to peoplebelow.  

Safety glasses and goggles will protect your eyes against chemicals and flying particles. If you normally wear glasses and you need to protect your eyes, wear goggles over the top of your glasses.
Hearing Protection: in a noisy environment like the engine room the people will need a protection for his ears; and this equipment is the appropriate to save them ears.
Security gloves are veryimportant for the safety of the hands, because they protect you for injury, burns, and cuts at work with heavy machines.

Housekeeping and safety in engine room

Bilges
All pipe or pump leakages shall be repaired as soon as possible to limit the amount of bilge water.
Engine Room Workshop
The engine room will be kept tidy to allow hot work when required. No storage of flammable material ispermitted.
Special Safety Items for attention in the engine room:

• Floor plates and ladders will be free for oil or grease.

• The manifolds shall be properly insulated and protected.

• Exhaust manifolds and ducts through the entire casing shall be free from leakages;

• When engine room is unmanned external entrances to the engine room shall be locked.

• Steam pipes and other hotsurfaces will be properly lagged.

• Insulation contaminated by oil or other flammable products will be renewed.
• Smoking is not allowed in the engine room.

• Minor oil leaks or spills often occur in the engine room.   Slips and falls are among the most common type of accident on board ship.  Oil spills need cleaning up immediately, and the source of any leak rectified.
