Jacques Soustelle’s Daily life of the Aztecs in chapter one “the City”, the author, using data from Hernan Cortez, describes with details how this ancient civilization wasorganized and also describes how advanced in science, mathematics, architecture, agriculture, business and warfare the Aztecs were; making contrast with Europe at the time of colonization, Aztecs andEuropeans had no differences at all. Both civilizations had established big fortified cities, markets, governments, religion, warfare and even ambition for wealth, expansion and power.
Perhaps beforeone reads this book, one might imagine a bunch of savages Indians living in huts, and without any knowledge in science. However, that is a wrong idea about ancient civilizations. Cortez himself wasastonished of the Aztecs; maybe more than the Aztecs were of him. Perhaps when he first saw this Indians with no clothes and bows and rows, he might have thought that this new world was a savage landfull of ignorant non-civilized people. Nevertheless, when he was introduced into the city, he couldn’t believe how advance the Aztecs were. Beautiful decorated Pyramids and buildings, not much differentthan they had in Europe, straight well built roads and walls that fortifies the city against any attack from outside, just like the castles and cities that they built in Spain, Portugal and manynations in Europe.
The author also states that Cortes made reference about markets, they were like nothing ever seen before in Europe, the biggest and most complete market in the world at that time,stating that Aztecs’ economy was also strong and complete, making the Aztecs the most successful empire of the ancient civilizations, having nothing to envy to Europe. Government and religion were themain source of power for the Aztecs, like it happened in Europe with the church and the monarchy; Not only all this characteristics states that there were not differences between the ancient Aztecs...
