Position Paper Of Hungary On The Suez Canal Crisis 1956

As one of the a founding member of the Warsaw Pact, the delegation of Hungary has had a long active roll on the crisis that governour world. Today we face a new challenge. One that, if not treated properly, could in fact put the world on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe, a third world war. We must determine the faith of theEgyptian water way, the Suez Canal. For this we shall need the assistance and collaboration of all members of the UN. We seek compromise in our negotiations, not only to save lives but to also maintaininternational peace and security. In particular, Hungary believes that it’s essential that the committee embrace an immediate ceasefire and demand the eviction of Israeli and British troops fromEgyptian terretorie.

The Suez Canal is vastly known as the modern wonder of the world, but there was a problem. Egyptian money and Egyptian slave labor helped build the canal, but all its profits wentto Britain and France. To this day Egypt holds one of the lowest life expectancy rates in the world. Hungary believes that this is absurd in a country that supposedly has a source of high income thussupports Egypt at it’s full. We also agree with what British Prime Minister Anthony Eden not long ago said: “..... the canal must be run in the interest, not of one country but of all”, taking intoaccount that the canal is vital to the global economy and should be functional at all time, without exception.

Furthermore, under no circumstances will Hungary support the use of armed forces foran invasion in the Middle East. We seek not violence but peace. We have reasons to believe that Britain and France intentions might not be completely legit. We suspect that the Israeli invasion is...
