I first would like to wish you and your Family a veryMerry Christmas… may you take comfort in the fact that we live in Canada, in Truro, N.S.- we have a higher standard of living than a lot of countries in the world; we are incredibly blessed. Our people care each other as witnessed by the Food Drives and numerous acts of goodwill in our area!
The New Year will be one of the most interesting and challenging in recent history. At a recent Chamber ofCommerce Luncheon Jamie Baillie, President and CEO of Credit Union Atlantic, and former resident of Truro, stated there has never been a time in history where so many countries are facing economic challenges all at the same time. But he is confident that we can work together and weather the storm. I believe he is right, and my hope for you and your family in 2009 is to count your blessings and takeit one day at a time- don’t borrow more trouble from tomorrow!
I would like to congratulate Colchester Country Mayor Bob Taylor on his recent election victory. Best wishes to Sharon McLean, new Chairwoman of the Village of Bible Hill. Truro Council and I are looking forward to working with you both to make good things happen!
I would also like to thank Premier Rodney MacDonald and CabinetMembers, Jamie Muir, Karen Casey, and Brooke Taylor for recently presenting to me and Mayor Bob Taylor a cheque for $10,000,000 towards the new Civic Centre. It’s the best Christmas present we could have received this year!
In other recent news, Truro was selected as a stop-off for the Olympic Flame for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on November 17th, 2009. If you are interested in carrying the torch nextyear visit www.vancouver2010.com/torchrelay for more information.
This Christmas season the town of Truro is proud to be participating with MADD Canada for operation Red Ribbon. If you are out celebrating and have been drinking, remember Operation Red Nose is a free transportation service for those who want to get their cars and themselves home safe and sound. The operation will run on weekendsuntil December 20th.
The Town is lit up and brightly shining for the Christmas/New Year season and my hope for 2009 is that we all year long. Take time this winter for a long walk or ski in Victoria Park – it’s a great way to clear your head and enjoy the beautiful Truro scenery!
In January Truro South Elementary School OPENS thanks to all who made it happen – we will work hard with PrincipalScott Armstrong and School Board rep Angela Dwyer James to make the opening as smooth as possible.

REMINDER FOR TAX PAYERS

Final tax bills for 2008/09 taxes due on November 3, 2008; interest is being added monthly on outstanding tax balances. Staff have beguntax sale proceedings for properties with taxes and/or capital charges outstanding for over three years, and have initiated collection proceedings for some business occupancy accounts. Taxpayers are reminded to pay their outstanding taxes, or contact the Finance Office at 895-4484 if payments arrangements are to be considered.
