Abstract

The tap water from Durango generally has chlorine excess that can harm health, discolor clothing, damagefish and even plants. We built three chlorine filters, all of them with the same material, design and constants.
They have a single variable, the material that we added to decrease the amount ofchlorine from tap water: Active coal “A”, clay “B” and coconut shell “C”.
Our objective was discovered which chlorine filter is the best to reduce the chlorine presence in tap water. We used thescientific method to obtain precise results, and our results demonstrated that the best chlorine filter is the coconut shell filter.

Introduction

Discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, whomistakenly thought it contained oxygen. Chlorine was given its name in 1810 by Humphry Davy, who insisted that it was in fact an element.
Chlorine has a huge variety of uses; as a disinfectant and purifier,in plastics and polymers, solvents, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Effects of chlorine on human health depend on how the amount of chlorine that is present, and the length and frequency ofexposure. Effects also depend on the health of a person or condition of the environment when exposure occurs.

Problem
In the tap water we find chlorine excess that is affecting the health of people,discoloring clothing and harming fish and plants. So, it is necessary to use a filter to reduce the concentration of chlorine.

Which of this filters (A-B-C) is the best to reduce theconcentration of chlorine in tap water?

Hypothesis
The coconut shell filter (C) is the best filter to reduce the chlorine of the tapwater.
