Realism, Naturalism and Puritanism

Realism and Naturalism are both expressed in different artistic ways. These too movements are both reflected more in the creation of the novel as they are quiterealistic in many ways. Naturalism was a movement in literature wich developed out of Realism. It began in the late nineteenth century (1865-1900). Naturalism originated as a french movement, wherethe naturalistic writers were influenced by the theory of evolution of Charles Darwin and the ideas of many philosophers. The main characteristic of literary naturalism is pessimism. Naturalism diveshead first into the major drama, favoring the low class for its characters and violence. Realism is very similar in many ways to Naturalism. In Realism the main focus was on the middle class and itsproblems. Realism sought to be a faithful representation of life. As they both express themselves in a very direct and logic way.

They are both two different movements, but they have at times foundthemselves to be sharing some similarities like they both are "basic" views of life and humanity. Both of these pessimistic views came to be in a time around the 19th century. God is absent frommost of the writing in either movements, with writers opting for a focus on the real world and its problems. Realism portrays things the way they might appear to be, while naturalism shows adeterministic view of a person's life and actions. Realism shows that a person's decision is based upon his response to the situation, whereas naturalism concludes that a person's decision is predetermined bynatural forces that make him act in a certain way. Though naturalism and realism are inter-related, they are two different genres of literature.
