Main Idea
The main idea is the most importantthing the paragraph says about the topic. The topic is what a paragraph is all about.

Drawing Conclusions
To draw conclusions is to come to a reasonedjudgement. It is to come to an opinion based upon reasoning and evidence. It is to be able to make a statement based upon logic. It involves using good judgementand evidence presented to evaluate or to validate. It means to come to a determination of what is true about one thing, based upon knowledge, opinions,observations and facts about something different but related.

Monitoring for Meaning
To monitor for meaning, you often need to reread, use visuals or some otherpart of the text to help you understand other sections.

Predicting
In predicting, you pay attention to clues that you can pick up with a quick glance –such as pictures, layout, or the title – and combine those clues with things you already know about the topic.

Summarizing
Summarizing and note taking arecompanion strategies. You start by recording key information as jot notes or point-form notes.

Imaging
When you visualize, you are creating a picture inyour mind of what you read. You may think of something that you’re familiar, You may also picture something entirely new, such as imagining what a characterlooks like from the description given by the author. Both ways help you to understand what you’re reading because they give you the ability to visualize it
