Thematic Essay- Reform Movements

Ever since the United States became a nation there have been many different movements, called reform movements that had led this country to bea better place. Such movements made a big difference in this country by changing laws and the way people lives. Reform movements have free slaves, given the people rights, women the right tovote, given better conditions for workers, and many more things. Two of the most important in the history of the United States were the abolitionist movement, and the progressive movement.
Theabolitionist movement was a group of people that was against slavery in the United States. One major goal this group of people did was the abolition of slavery in the country. These problemsbetween the anti slavery movement and the pro slavery; eventually made the country divide into two. An action the government took was to abolish slavery, but that decision created a civil warconflict that lasted from 1861 to 1865. During that period of time the president of the United States Abraham Lincoln free the slaves with the “Emancipation proclamation”.
The progressivemovement or progressive era was a time of social activism and political reforms. There was corruption on political machines where people voted, so one of the main goals of the progressive movementwas to expose those political machine and corrupted bosses. The progressive movement begun around the 1890’s and ended around the 1920’s. The government passed a lot of new laws during thatperiod of time.
Reform movements have made a big difference in the country we live in today. Without many of the reforms that happened maybe women wouldn’t have rights or the conditions infactories would be as bad as they were, and maybe even there would still be slavery in the United States. A fact is that reform movements were very important and made this country a better place.
