Relativism
One day I was walking on the street and suddenly I heard a man saying “I sell the best CD’s, 120 song of the best music of 2011”. I kept walking and a few minutes later I saw a restaurantand on one of it walls it had a legend written that said “The best hamburgers”, I walked by and saw another one that said “The best steak restaurant in Mexico”, I turned around and saw another one“The best ice-creams” or in a night club “The best ambiente”. Wherever I went, wherever I turned everything I saw and everything I heard was the best this, the best that, it’s the best. The best, what acomplex word. As I kept walking I started thinking, I am sure the steak restaurant was pretty nice or those hamburgers tasted really great, I am sure those ice-creams where delicious, I am sure that myphilosophy teacher is great and I am pretty sure that if I had gone to that club I would have had a great time but… the best? The best of what, of the town? Of the state? Of the world? And mostimportantly… the best according to whom? Or according to what parameters?
Relativism, what a funny thing. Everything is true and yet nobody is lying. So basically if the owner of a store says that hisstore is the best, and across the street there’s a different store selling the exact same thing and the owner of that store says that his store is the best, they are both telling the truth. Some of themost important advocates of relativism were:
Sophists, they were among the first to conclude that truth is relative. According to them, relativism is the belief that knowledge is determined by thespecific qualities of the observer. And they argued that we only need to accept what, according to our culture, seems true at the moment. They also said that relativism had two basic variants whichwhere: cultural and individual.
Cultural relativism is the belief that all values are culturally determined. Values merely reflect the customs and preferences that develop in a given culture....
