Summary
“Articulatory Phonetics:
The speech mechanism”

It chapter speak about the articulatory phonetics. Speech is a secondary action of the vocal tract, after than breathing. But, the twice are connected.

To can produce the speech, we need a series of organs and cavities. Those parts are:

- Nose cavity
- Mouth cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
-Trachea
- Lung
- Diaphragm

All it organs and cavities, make a way for the air. So, the air enters through the nose and/ or mouth, continuing through the pharynx, the larynx and trachea, finally, it come into the lungs.
The speech sounds are produce when the air is going out. The mechanism brings the air from the bottom to the top. To can produce sounds, we need basic elements thatstart to work when we are bringing the air out.

Lungs: these are two organs, wich are made to expand (during the inhalation) or contract (during the exhalation). These are the motor or initiator onthe speech process.

The Larynx: is a structure located in the top of the trachea, in the prominence known the Adam’s apple. It contains the first valve that interferes with the passage ofairstream: the vocal folds. These are two bands of muscle lying across the center of the larynx.
These vocal folds can be open in a form of V-shape (during normal breathing), be closely together (air cannotpass through) or be open (the air passing through them). When the vocal folds are open and the air is passing through them, causes them vibrate, and this vibrate produce a sound, and this sound iswhat we call voice.

We can find two kinds of sounds in the speech:

Voiceless sound : they are produce with only breath (for example “F”)
Voiced sound : produced with vibrations (for example“V”)

The cavities or resonators: a resonator is any hollow space that can contain the air. The resonators cannot generate sounds; just change the quality and the extensive of it.
The human speech...
