New Yorkers looking for jobs can expect growingopportunities – with high-tech and health care topping the list as fast- surging occupations.
A special Daily News job market analysis also reveals that many fast-growing occupations will be among themost high-paying.
Average salaries in these areas should range from $50,000 to $57,000a year- three and four times what waitresses and cashiers commonly earn.
According state Labor Departmentprojects, New York job seekers can count on double-digit increases in demand for computer engineers, systems analysts, home health attendants and physical and occupational therapists over the next severyears.
These mostly white-collar jobs; however, require specialized skills and education, and will not necessarily offer the largest number of openings.
In terms of openings, the biggest field in NewYork’s service-driven economy will still be salespeople, cashiers, secretaries and waitresses.
In all, the city is poised to create 108,020 job openings in the next year, most in retail andtourism, according to the Labor Department.
The growth of professional occupations, however is seen as sign that the city’s economy is growing – and providing higher- paying jobs.
“By and large, mosthealth care jobs pay well, and computer jobs also pay well because it is technical skill that you have to know,” said labor analyst Jeff Weissenstein. “And there is great demand for all of them.
Theupswing in technology jobs is being driven by the importance of computers and New York’s reputation as a new media hub.
In health care, efforts by hospitals to cut cost and provide more outpatientservice have increased demands for home heath services.
