Zack Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California and later moved to Arroyo Grande, California. He is the son of David Efron, a mechanic, and Starla Baskett, a secretary. Of Jewish ancestry,Efron was raised agnostic and has never been religious. Described himself as "a normal child" of a middle class family with strict parents and has a younger brother, Dylan. He did some work on theperformances he attended school, worked at a theater called "The Melodrama" and took singing lessons.
