Rules For Adding Ed
REGULAR VERBS IN THE PAST
SPELLING RULES FOR ADDING ED TO MAKE THE PAST OF REGULAR VERBS.
A. When regular verbs end intwo consonants or two vowels plus a consonant, add ed at the end to form the past. Examples:
melt melt ed fill fill ed start start ed
want want ed look looked cook cook ed
B. When the verb ends in silent e or ie, you only add the d. Examples:
save save d race race d
explode explode d move move dtie tie d die die d
C. When the verb has one syllable and ends in a consonant + vowel + consonant,
double the consonant. Examples:
drop dropped hughugged
mop mopped drag dragged
stop stopped beg begged
plan planned hop hopped
rub rubbed clap clapped
NOTE: DO NOT DOUBLETHE CONSONANT if the verb ends in w, or x.
Examples: snow snow ed bow bow ed fix fix ed mix mix ed
D. When the verb has two syllables and thestress is on the second syllable,
double the consonant. Example:
omit omit t ed prefer prefer r ed
admit admit t ed occur occur r ed
E.. When theverb has two syllables and the stress is on the first syllable,
do not double the consonant. Example:
vi’ sit visit ed o’ ffer offer ed
li’ stenlisten ed ha’ ppen happen ed
F. When the verb ends in consonant and y, change the y to i and add ed.
Examples:
study stud ied worry worr ied cry cr iedhurry hurr ied carry carr ied try tr ied
G. When the verb ends in vowel plus y, keep the y and add ed. Examples:
play play ed enjoy enjoy ed stay stay ed
