Life is about choices, but do we always make the right choice? The story “A&P” by John Updike about a young boy and his name is Sammy. He works in an A&Pstore. One day he saw three girls in bathing suit entered the store and his manager embarrassed the girls and he quit his job because he didn’t agree that the manager did that to the girls. Sammywanted to impress Queenie, the leader of the three girls, and let Lengel, the store manager, know that it was not fair to threat the girls like that. There were many different ways that Sammy could havedone to show what he really wanted.
Once Sammy saw the girls, he should have talked to them and let them know that if the manager sees them in bathing suit he would be really mad. “Sammy is innocentrather than immature because he doesn't seem to realize that ogling the girls in bathing suits might not be the right thing to do” (Garner). As stated in the story we know that Sammy has been workingsince a long time so he knows where everything is and he could help the girls find what they were looking for quickly and maybe they could become friends later on. A girl does not really see quittinga job an act of braveness. No man will impress a woman by quitting his job.
"The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle-the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-waysigns or anything- were pretty hilarious" Clearly Sammy was not happy in his job; he refers to the customers as Sheep and he found funny how A&P customers act like animal running through the storeevery day. Sammy, before quitting, he should have talked to Lengel to tell him his feeling about these girls. The way Lengel had talk to the girls was not the best and how he was feeling about the job.Sometimes talking helps to solve the problem.
I think if Sammy only wanted it to impress the girls, He did not have to quit. When the three girls were in front of him and the manager was talking to...
