Singapore was a part of British Malaya for many centuries. It was ruled by the Sultanate of Johor. In 1819, the British came to the Island and set up a port and colony. During British rule, the portof Singapore flourished and attracted many migrants. After World War 2, Singapore became an independent nation and a republic, which it remains toda, a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tipof the Malay Peninsula. An island country made up of 63 islands.
Singaporean culture is best described as a melting pot of mainly Chinese, British, Malay, and Indian cultures. Singapore has one ofthe best economies in the world.
Singapore has four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.[155] English is the common language of the nation and is the language of business, governmentand medium of instruction in schools.
Buddhism is the most widely practised religion in Singapore, with 33% of the resident population declaring themselves adherents at the most recent census. Thenext largest religious demographics, in order of size, are Christianity, non-religious, Islam, Taoism and Hinduism.
Chinese is the language which is spoken by most Singaporeans as their nativetongue—half of all Singaporeans speak it as their native tongue.[154] Singaporean Mandarin is the most common version of Chinese in the country,[165] with 1.2 million using it as their home language.
TheGovernment of Singapore is defined by the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore to mean the Executive branch of government, which is made up of the President and the Cabinet of Singapore. Althoughthe President acts in his personal discretion in the exercise of certain functions as a check on the Cabinet and Parliament of Singapore, his role is largely ceremonial.
