Social control refers to the methods used by the members of society to mantain order, that way, coexistence in society will be much easier for everyone. There are different ways of socialcontrol such as, informal, formal, criminal sanction, licensing , inspection, prostitution or drug addiction.
In relation to the film, we can see certain techniques of social control. The main examplewhich appears on the film is the big number of times Charlie Chaplin is sent to jail. He was sent for several reasons which we will be explaining. The first reason was because after leaving hospital, ismistakenly arrested because the police thought he was the leader of a communist demonstration. The second time Chaplin is arrested is when he decided to go back to jail, and, as a result, he enters acafeteria, eats and leaves the establishment without paying. Then, the character manages to have a new job as nightwatchman at a department store, so, he lets the orphan gamine sleep in one of thebeds, and also lets a group of burglars have food (adding that one of the burglars used to be his companion at the factory) . He got drunk and woke up in a pile of clothes, as a result, he is put intojail. Later he gets a new job, but workers decide to go on strike. Accidentally paddling a brick into a policeman, he is arrested again. We can get to understand that for every action there is aconsequence, and that if everybody acted the same way as Chaplin, society would be a disaster, because we would not respect others, we would not take seriously our jobs, managing to be uneffective, or wewould not value the job of others, not paying for their service. That is the reason why rules need to be imposed. This number of scenes previously spoken about, show, that the technique of social controlis that if you decide to forget about rules, you will go directly to jail.
