Social Darwinism: Good or Evil?
“Business is business” and “the end justifies the means” are common phrases heard in the business environment. The theory of Social Darwinism, proposed by the Englishphilosopher Herbert Spencer, has been since long time ago, a justification or even the main key for business men to succeed in their own projects. This paper is going to analyze whether the SocialDarwinism is beneficial to the Society in general or not.
During the industry expansion in the United States, great companies started to gain popularity, money, power and many other privileges. Theystarted to extend their industries in an amazing way and speed through the whole nation, and managing a large part of the United States Economy. The term Social Darwinism or the “survival of thefittest” concept mean that only the best adapted (those already well off) will continue developing well in the society. Relating this interpretation with companies and markets, it brings to our minds the ideaof a battle for surviving in the market area.
The competition itself is something that we are used to face in a daily basis; society everyday is involved in competition, a clear example of this isthat we as society vote for those who we want to lead us and represent us as nation. Sports, just with a few exceptions are based on competition. For those directly involved in sports, competition has abig role in the personal motivation of the person who practice them. The competition make the athletes strive and push hard until they reach their goals.
Talking about businesses, it doesn’t matterif it is a big company or a little store, the competition is similar, every owner finds his own technique to make his company to fulfill its purpose: to make money. It is required for the business toadapt to the consumers or customers desires whereas at the same time they accomplish theirs too.
