Society Without Rules
Evil can be learned from society. People who surround others make them evil simply by making them do things they do not want to do. An example of how people can learn to beevil can be found in the character Ralph in this short story Lord of the Flies by William Golding, when he kills Piggy. “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of the man’s heart, and thefall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.” (202). This quote means that even though some people do not want to be evil, like Ralph, they act without even thinking whether it is right orwrong. If it is wrong, they are being evil without even wanting to be. Children are not born evil because they are born without any knowledge. Little children just copy or imitate what older peoplelike their parents, siblings or cousins do, without knowing whether they are doing right or wrong.
However, another example that shows that we only learn to be evil from the society is Simon. He hasa magnificent inner-strength because even though all the kids on the island became evil and lost the majority of their innocence, specially Ralph, he did not became evil and he showed hisinner-strength. “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, out-stretched hands.” (56). This quote shows Simon’sinner-strength because although all the kids on the island ignored the little ones, he helped them reach the fruit they could not get for themselves.
In addition, Jack can also be an example of howevilness is learned from the society instead of being born evil. When Jack first arrived on the island, he was a disciplined, well-behaved schoolboy, who would not break any rules. However, sincethere were no grownups on the island, there was no one there to enforce the rules and punish those who broke them. Jack soon realized that rules meant nothing on the island.
