GigE VOD Transport

The Motorola GTS-2 offers a flexible choice of field-updateable edge device interfaces including SX, LX, and TX
Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules. The Motorola GTS-2 is designed to provide low-cost VOD streaming
solutions from servers at the headend to remote distribution hubs.

Operators canimplement scalable VOD transport using
GigE and DWDM technologies. For example, a cable
operator can support GigE VOD transport by connecting
the VOD servers through an Ethernet switch using two
GigE connections to a single Gigabit Transport Simplex
(GTS-2) transmitter port. The economics of this solution
are compelling.

The DWDM wavelengths from individual GTS-2s are
multiplexed at theheadend and demultiplexed at the
remote distribution hub using a GTS-2 Receiver. Channels are fed through encryptor/modulators such as the
Motorola SmartStream Encryptor/Modular (SEM) and
the video channel travels across the HFC network to a
Motorola set-top box at the subscriber location such as
the DCT5100.

The GTS-2 provides efficient, scalable, and cost effective transport of GigEsignals over DWDM networks by
multiplexing two GigEs onto a single ITU wavelength.
This allows an MSO to transport approximately 480
video streams per lightwave. With Motorola’s GTS-2 and
DWDM solutions, up to 40 wavelengths or up to 19,200
video streams can be transported on a single fiber.
