Stephen Hawking
Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was notavailable at University College, so he did Physics instead.
When he turned 20, he noticed that he was getting clumsy. Doctors soon diagnosed him with Sclerosis. He is wheelchairbound, but his mind functions perfectly. Professor Hawking's positive attitude does not let his disability get in the way of his achievement. In 1965, his marriage to Jane Wilde
With Roger Penrose, he showed that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These resultsindicated it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory.
Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This wouldimply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science. Stephen Hawking has many popular books published; Holes, Baby Universes and The Universe in aNutshell.

2006 Copley Medalof the Royal Society 2008 Fonseca Prize of the University of Santiago de Compostela 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
