Sternberg Theoty Of Love And Shakespeare
The empty love is the one that only has the commitment. Is the type of love that Lady Capulet and Juliet show to have to each other. During the play it is clearly demonstrated that these two, Lady Capulet and Juliet, do not have a good relation. It is notice when the mother said according to Shakespeare (1597) “Here comes your father, tell him so yourself, and see how hewill take it at yours hands” and “Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee.” On these two cites you can recognize that Lady Capulet do not have the interest of helping her daughter to make the decision that she want or what would make her happy. Juliet has another relation were you can see these type of love, too. It is with Capulet, her father. If youread the first act of the play, you may think that he only wanted the Juliet get married with the man that she prefer or love. But, this thought will get out of your mind when you continue reading. He said from Shakespeare (1597):
“Hang thee young baggage, disobedient wretch! I tell thee what – get thee to church a Thursday or never after look at me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answerme. My gingers itch. Wife, we scare thought us blest that God had lent us but this is only child; but now I see this once too much, and that we have a curse in having her. Out on her, hilding.”
Here you can notice that Capulet only want to get married Juliet with or without her consent. You can, also, notice the empty love between Capulet and the Nurse, once he said to her according toShakespeare (1597) “Peace, you mumbling fool! Utter your gravity o’er a gossip‘s bowl, for here we need it not.” This clearly demonstrated that Capulet and the Nurse only have a relation of employer and employee. On these relations is presented an empty love because the passion or intimacy doesn’t exist. They only have a formal mother and daughter or father and daughter relation, they don’t have a trust ora physic attraction.
Other type of love is the infatuated love. On these you only have the passion, sometimes is better known like love as first sight. At the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo had an infatuation on Rosaline. He said according to Shakespeare (1597) “O she is rich is beauty, only poor that when she dies, with beauty dies her store.” This cite only tell you that Romeo is sadbecause Rosaline is beautiful and she will never going to be with him or anyone. The relation between Paris and Juliet is an infatuation, too. Paris can be seen like a doom man in the play because he thinks that Juliet love him when she is telling him that she love other man, he said from Shakespeare (1597) “Do not deny to him that you love me.” As a result of this he think that Juliet is himproperty when he said according to Shakespeare (1597) “Thy face is mine and thou hast slandered it.” He thinks that he owns her and he shows that he only like Juliet for her appearance. In both examples only one of them is feeling the passion, the other is indifferent. But, in both doesn’t exist a commitment to continue the relation or a friendship, it is only a physic attraction from one of them....
