A Streetcar Named Desire- Scene 2 notes
Pay attention to double meanings in this scene.

What is being revealed with thefact that Stanley opens Blanche’s trunk?
He’s invading in her privacy. He doesn’t know the limits with her, showing a violent act ((perfume, trunk, and letters).

In this scene wealso realize that Blanche is not a naïve woman. She has experience with men. She refers to Stanley as being primitive, honest and straight-forward. And she also flatters him. Though he,does not flatter her.

How do you think Stanley reads Blanche?
She’s a liar. She has spent all the money on clothes and jewelry. She’s here pretending being a victim. “I don’t buy whatyou are selling’’, ‘’Don’t try to seduce me, because I know what you are doing’’.

Burn letters( those are too valuable/pure to be touched by someone like Stanley.

What is it thatBlanche thinks that Stanley will do to her?
She thinks that Stanley is going to hurt her just like she has hurt her husband. But he won’t be able to, because she’s not young andvulnerable anymore.

How is it that Blanche describes women’s attitude towards men?
Women pretend(appearance and attitude) a lot of things(to seduce). 50% is what women want men to think andthe other 50% is the truth.

One of the themes: Reality VS. Illusion

Elysian Fields according to Greek mythology is the underworld where the pure souls go. Paradise is reserved toworthy mortals.
The Napoleonic Code is the civil law according to the state of Louisiana.
‘’The blind are leading the blind’’( both will fall into a pit. Going no where. Both will fail. The sexual tension rises in this scene.

Why do you think the scene ends by the phrase ‘’Red-hot!’’?
It means that things are becoming more difficult, ‘’hotter and hotter’’.
