In A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and in The Beggar Maid written by Alice Munro, the authors present in both stories a similar theme, which is the contrast in socioeconomic levels and also the contrast in personalities from the main characters and how these different personalities affect their relationships.
The purpose of this essayis to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the two readings mentioned above and analyze the different types of their personalities and the way these affect the lifestyles and the fates of the characters.
The two variables that will be used for the analysis of the readings are the personality of the characters and their socioeconomic status.

Personality is something that defines us. Every one has a different personality and that is something that is shaped through our lives. Every different experience affects us in a special way and affects the way our personality develops. In the story A Streetcar Named Desire the author exposes different types of personalities and the patterns are clearly observed. Ones aredefined personalities others are undefined. For instance, Stella knows precisely who she is and what she wants in life. While on the other hand, Blanche has an undefined personality and she does not know how to deal with this.

These facts are inferred directly from the text. The author describes Stella as having a defined life, she knows who she loves, Stanley, and she is developing her life. Incontrast, Blanche does not have a defined life, she is uncertain about her future; she is going from place to place looking for something. This can be attributed to the different personalities they have. For instance, Blanche experienced the deaths of her relatives while Stella did not because she was far away. From this information presented in the text we can infer that they developed a differentpersonality. Both of them had different types of love experiences, while Stella experienced a good one Blanche did not. This influenced them in a different way; as a result they developed different personalities.

Stella and Stanley come from different socioeconomic groups this affects the way people think about them. In the text the author is very clear explaining that Stanley comes from apoor background while Stella comes from a rich family. It is clear also that this does not affect the way the relationship takes place, as they both love each other. But it does affect the way Blanche looks at the situation, she judges Stanley in a very harsh way. Stanley is a working-class person who works to support his family. Blanche considers that he is not worthy of having her sister as wife.Stella does not judge Stanley according to a socioeconomic class, she judges him according to her heart.

From the information presented in the text it can be inferred that Stella is a more sentimental person than Blanche is. Blanche only cares about the superficial things, this is clearly shown by the way she speaks and how she tries to be someone she really is not. Stella on the other handjudges a person by her heart, Stanley in this case. Blanche judges the marriage by a superficial way of thinking based on the different social classes involved in it. This is not morally right but it is unfortunately the way some people think. Therefore it can be inferred that Blanche and Stella have a different way of thinking and of looking at life itself, this can bring us back to our firstvariable, personality.
