Before this documentary I thought that making a sacrifice for a film, meaning gaining weight and risking health or even life, was only for those super stars that pursue a well-known reputation as actor/actress or a film award. In this case we have an independent moviemaker named Morgan Spurlock which produced and starred the movie himself, after some sues made by two American obese young girlsagainst fast food companies. The goal of his sacrifice, from what I understood, was to make conscious about obesity affecting not only USA but the globe. The movie starts with a very happy but at the same time depressing scene of some kids singing about fast food and how much they like it. During the next scenes viewers can see that USA has a lot of fast food enterprises, and indeed the countrypopulation has a serious problem with obesity. Spurlock went through a 30-day journey in which he forced himself to eat only the menu offered by McDonald’s.
The producer knew this attempt to his body had to be “fair” enough to prove that fast food has a huge influence in people’s health and while he was visiting some doctors in order to give credibility to his effort, he mentioned some facts abouthow big this entry is. Morgan pointed some of the principal fast food companies within the country and also some numbers about how often population eats this food. The main fact in this introduction was that USA was the country with the highest amount of obesity, and he showed shocking scenes of people and kids with this problem. As a matter of fact, USA is no longer the country with the highestaverage of obese people, last year Mexico took the first spot on the list. Although there are some differences between these countries concerning type of food, as a Mexican, I would say we took some of North American manners, and this is because fast food enterprises are growing and establishing themselves all over the world. I dare say that is not only about what enterprises offer but also aboutwhat people takes from them, meaning the new culture of feeding themselves.
Our brave star supplemented his documentary with some interviews during these 30 days, and he found out that some people think is not mandatory to eat this type of food, even though we can find it wherever we go, it is our choice. As I mentioned in the very beginning there were some sues from two American young girls, theyaimed that McDonald’s was responsible for their weight and health by offering their type of food. One man said a terrific truth Americans would sue the other way around too, meaning that if this enterprise forbade its food, they would have been sued as well. In the very beginning a quote of McDonald’s founder came out: “Look after the customer and the business will take care of itself” (RayKroc), according to one of the doctors’ comment, it’s a food’s drug effect that keeps people coming back again and again. Just like any other substance, food also is an addiction and not only affects health but also it affects emotions.
Fast food is the name given to food that can be prepared and served quickly, and it came out during the early 20th Century. From every source, I found out McDonald’sis one of the pioneers of this entry. As I perceive it, only three benefits come out from fast food: it is easy and quickly to get, I believe it can be an option when people don’t have enough time to cook and it is affordable; one can be satisfied for a reasonable amount of money and finally one do not have to wash the dishes. On the other hand, disadvantages can be part of a large list: throughall these years McDonald’s has increased the variety of products, but each option is not so different from another one, Spurlock ate all options in the first 9 days of his adventure; fast food affects health by increasing levels of fat in the blood leading to heart and liver diseases; it affects people’s performance at everyday activities; it does not offer nutrition facts information, so added...
